Welcome

We are pleased to welcome you to the 16th Annual Conference of the Society for the Study of Childhood in the Past (SSCIP) at Bordeaux Montaigne University (Pessac, France) on November 20-23, 2024.

The SSCIP is an international scientific society founded in 2007 in the UK. Its main mission is to promote all aspects of the study of childhood (in the broadest sense) in the recent or distant past. This includes research in archaeology, anthropology, history, biology, sociology, and psychology, spanning all time periods and geographical regions.

The main aim of the 2024 SSCIP conference is to highlight the interdisciplinarity in the study of the developing human being through its various stages of life (in utero, childhood, adolescence), considering the multitude of factors that can influence it (e.g. cultural, biological, environmental), whether in normal or pathological contexts. The focus will be on methods (e.g. imaging techniques, genomics, proteomics, isotopes, AI), frames of reference (e.g. databases, identified skeleton collections, archives) and the contributions of past studies to the present, and vice versa.

We will, also, have a session where the focus is not just on interdisciplinary research.

We are accepting proposals for papers and posters. Abstracts (300 words max) and presentations will be in English. The research presented could, for example, deal with applications to a specific period (from prehistory to the present day), to a given issue (health, place in society, cultural differences, lifestyles, diet, etc.), or with methodological developments.

The Scientific Committee will review all submissions, and you will be notified if your paper has been accepted.

All information related to the conference will be published on this website.

We look forward to welcoming you!
